Some Goulash Treats for Slow Cookers

The goulash may have originated in Hungary, but it has become a worldwide dish. Give yourself a treat by whipping out these dishes on your slow cooker.

Saucy Beef Goulash

You must prepare the following ingredients: steak (2 lbs, sliced into cubes), olive oil (a couple of tablespoons), pepper (1/3 teaspoon), salt (1/2 teaspoon), a cup of sliced red onions, a cup of mushrooms, 3 cups of sour cream and 1 and ½ cups of all purpose flour. You should also get a package of noodles or 2 cups of rice.

To make this dish, heat some cooking oil in a frying pan and cook the steak. Next put some of the sliced red onions in the slow cooker, and pour in half the sour cream. Put the steak on top of it, and put in the rest of the red onions and the sour cream. Add the mushrooms, salt, pepper, and the flour.

Cook the goulash in the slow cooker by turning it up high. You want the meat to tenderize, so give it at least 6 hours (8 is better). Afterwards, prepare the serving bowls and serve the meal.

White Wine with Goulash

Give your goulash a more singular taste by using these ingredients: 2 teaspoons of salt, onion (1 large slice), pepper (1/3 teaspoon), 2 lbs steak (cut into thin strips), 2 cups of garlic powder, a cup of dry white wine, a couple of tablespoons of seasoning sauce and beef broth (2 cups).

You will also need a cup of ketchup, mushrooms (12 ounces), a teaspoon of butter, half a cup of flour and a cup of sour cream.

Start by seasoning the steak with some butter, pepper and salt. Insert it in the slow cooker, and top it with some onion slices. Get a small bowl and pour in the ketchup, garlic powder, broth and the seasoning sauce. Mix them thoroughly and pour onto the meat.

Press the control on the slow cooker to high (cook it for 8 hours). After 7 hours, open the lid and pour in the mushrooms, sour cream and white wine. Close and at a high setting, cook for another 2 hours. Serve the goulash with a plate of steamed rice.

The Hungarians served their goulash with other seasonings and flavorings, such as red wine, apple juice and others. You can give it a shot yourself with your slow cooker, and discover that there is still much to be learned –and relished- in this Old World delight.
