Spinach Soufflé

For this dish, a couple pounds of frozen spinach (drained), half a cup of mayonnaise, grated onion (1/4 cup), cream cheese (8 ounces), shredded cheese (half a cup), a couple of beaten eggs, green beans, white pepper, and some nutmeg.

After 9 hours on the slow cooker (low), open the crock pot and add the cornstarch and water, stirring it well. After that, the dish is ready.

Green beans make an excellent addition to you recipe, adding unique flavorings to otherwise plain dishes. Even though some of these recipes are not usually served with them, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give it a go.

It’s your slow cooker, so there’s nothing to stop you from deviating from the “traditional” recipes. Besides, why should you let your dishes mix in when it can be heads and shoulders above the rest?

Slow Cooker Recipe: Spicy Party Beans

A slow cooker is an excellent kitchen tool for whipping up party food without slaving over a stove all day. One festivity favorite is spicy party beans which is a one-pot-entrée in itself. Creating this dish with a slow cooker requires a bit of sautéing at first to bring the flavors out. But after that, all you need to do is dump in the ingredients and let the crock pot do its magic.

This spicy party beans slow cooker recipe calls for the following ingredients (portions fit well in a 6-quart cooker):

1 pound ground beef
1 pound of bulk pork sausage (if you can’t find it, substitute your favorite sausage links in stead – just take the skin off each link and mash the meat)
2 28-ounce cans of pork and beans
2 28-ounce cans of kidney beans (a good substitute is pinto beans)
1 cup of barbecue sauce
1 red bell pepper that’s chopped
1 onion that’s chopped
2 teaspoons of minced garlic
2 teaspoons of mild chili powder (add more if you want extra heat)
½ teaspoon of Cajun seasoning
½ teaspoon of salt
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Drain off the liquid from the kidney beans and rinse them under running water. After that, add them inside the slow cooker. Pour the pork and beans in there as well.

Heat the vegetable oil on high in a frying pan then sauté the sausage meat and ground beef until they change color. Make sure to break the meat apart as soon as it touches the heat so that you wouldn’t end up with bound-together meat.

When the meat’s brown (but not cooked all the way through), scoop them out with a slotted spoon (to drain excess oil) and dump the meat in the slow cooker. Also, mix it together so that the meat’s incorporated with the beans.

Turn the stove heat down to “medium” and sauté the onion, red bell pepper and garlic in the same frying pan. After a couple of minutes of sautéing, turn the heat off and use the slotted spoon again to scoop the vegetables out and put them in the slow cooker. Mix them with what’s already in the pot as well.

Finally, mix in the spices and barbecue sauce in the crock pot and cover it. Now, you can either set it to “high” that’ll put the cooking time for 3-4 hours or you can set it to “low” so that it’ll be done in 6-7 hours.

This slow cooker spicy party beans recipe is good for around 6-8 persons and is best served hot from the pot with rice or corn bread. You may also add one chopped red jalapeno pepper in the recipe as well – depending on you (and your party guests’) heat tolerance, of course.

Crock Pot Slow Cookers: How to Care for Them

Crock pot slow cookers are here once again. And it’s really nice to see their comeback to the world of home cooking after having been (close enough to being) nearly forgotten years after their first emergence to the society.

But then, even though a lot of people are already familiar with how to care for this type of cookery – in order to make these crock pot slow cookers last longer in one’s kitchen – there are still those who have never encountered them before, and are probably at a loss on what to do in terms of cleaning and caring for these cooking equipments.

For these people, one thing that they should take note of is that it’s actually very simple to ensure that the working capacity of these crock pot slow cookers are kept in good shape and condition.

Incredulous of what we are saying here? Well, allow us to show you some guidelines that can make the experience of newly-introduced individuals to the world of crock pot slow cookers easier to live on.

Here are a few tips that they can follow at home:

* Never remove the top while cooking.
When cooking on a stovetop, the usual gesture of a cook, to check if the food is already ready to serve, is to open the lid of the pot.

With crock pot slow cookers, this isn’t recommended since this would only prolong the time involved in cooking, and would also cause the cookery to decrease or lose the heating level it works on.

* Do not pour cold water to cool this cooking appliance.
In the attempt, perhaps, to cool crock pot slow cookers, in order to make it easier to remove the morsels of food stuck on the inside, an individual would probably pour cold water into it.

However, doing so may affect the heating element, and may make the inner parts crack.

* Thaw frozen foods before cooking with the use of crock pot slow cookers.
First-timers should take note of this: It would be wise to thaw foods first before adding them to the crock pot slow cookers. If not, this would only increase the hours involved in cooking.

* Use vinegar to remove stains.
Scraping the insides would only result in unsightly scratch marks that would be hard to cover up. A cup of vinegar mixed with hot water can help loosen the stains, and make the chore less difficult.

So, for those who would like to know how to care for crock pot slow cookers, better remember that it’s not a hard task to deal with. With these tips, one should be able to make these cooking equipments work effectively for a long time.

Heat up the Crockpot

Everyone loves to eat. Relationships are forged and built around food since time immemorial. The preparation itself is a show of care and love for the people who will be dining on the sumptuous meal. For many, meals with the added spice tickle the senses and with the use of modern technology of crock pot, a number of recipes have been introduced in preparing chili recipes. At present, the chilies have made their way for slow cooking.

Chili, though spelled in different ways like chilli, or chile, refers to the fruit from the Genus Capsicum plants and Solanaceae or otherwise known as nightshade family. The chili fruit is used as spices or vegetables in food preparation and medicine. For the rest of the world, it’s called paprika, pepper, bell pepper or capsicum, all referring to the same fruit.

The usage of chili, be it the bell peppers, chili powder or the long jalapeños in gourmet and cuisine, they never fail to bring out the flavor of the meal prepared. Even the use of Tabasco on our pizza brings out the taste of each ingredient, giving us the enjoyment of eating while others prefer to eat the chilies raw and whole or minced with sauces. The intensity of the chili comes from the inside of the pod with the seeds and the substance that causes the fiery intensity or heat is called capsaicin. Not all chili peppers are “hot”. According to the Scoville scale, a sweet pepper or otherwise known as bell pepper has a 0 SHU (Scoville unit). This measure was designed by diluting a solution of pepper extract in sugar water, until the heat is no longer felt by a panel of usually five tasters.

There are varieties of preparing and cooking crock pot chili recipes. The turkey crock pot chili uses ground turkey with pinto beans, tomatoes, salsa, chili powder and cumin but before adding all the ingredients in the slow cooker, the ground turkey is browned in a skillet with onions and is transferred to the crock pot after removing the excess fat. The beef crock pot chili uses ground beef with all the ingredients like the typical chili con carne with black beans and tomato sauce. You can go vegetarian with the vegetable crock pot chili that includes rice, potatoes, beans and tomatoes. Another variety of crock pot chili is the taco crock pot chili if you want to go Mexican loco over tacos. Whichever recipe you choose, you’ll still get the needed spice and intensity just the way you want it and get a dose of Vitamin C.

Slow Cooker Recipe: French Dip Sandwich

A French dip sandwich is named after the bread used, that is, crusty French bread. It’s basically a beef sandwich that you dip in a sort of gravy or broth – hence, the operative word, “dip”, in its name. Normally, people would roast the beef in the oven for many hours and watch it now and again to keep the juices from drying out. But with a slow cooker, making this scrumptious sandwich is a breeze because it makes the meat very tender. So, here’s a slow cooker recipe for a French dip sandwich that can make 6-8 servings in a 4 ½- to 6-quart slow cooker.

Here’s a list of what you’ll need to make this slow cooker French dip sandwich:

3 lbs. of beef pot roast meat (preferably, the chuck)
2 cups of beef broth
1 ½ cups of condensed soup, French onion (if you can’t find the condensed kind, substitute with 1 packet of onion soup mix and 2 cups of regular French onion soup from a can)
¾ of a cup of red wine (use the kind that you like to drink)
1 tsp. of garlic powder
Salt and pepper
French bread or crusty rolls

Here’s what you’ll do for preparing this recipe:

Pour the broth, condensed onion soup, red wine, and garlic powder in the slow cooker. Season the beef with salt and pepper and put it in the pot with the liquids. Set the cooker to “low” for 7-8 hours or if you prefer it to cook quicker, you can set it to “high” for 4-5 hours.

When the beef for the French dip sandwich is done and tender, take it out and slice it thinly or shred it. After that, put it back in the slow cooker with the broth. Set it to low and cover it while you slice and toast the bread.

Create the French dip sandwich by using tongs to pick the meat up and put them between bread slices. And prior to serving the dip (broth), you’ll notice oil floating on the surface of the broth. You should scoop some of it out before you ladle the broth in small serving bowls or ramekins.

Digging into a French dip sandwich requires one to dip it first in the hot broth before taking a bite – that’s the best part about this hearty dish. And using a slow cooker to cook the beef always results in really tender meat. It’s also good to have each person get their own dipping bowls too because the only way to enjoy this rich beef sandwich, is to make a fresh dip per bite. With that said, multiple-dipping is more than allowed… it’s required!

Three Uses for a 1.5 Quart Slow Cooker

A 1.5 quart slow cooker has mostly been marketed for making dips and sauces given its capacity for small amounts. But how much can this specific cooker really accommodate?

Considering normal conversions, you can fit, at most, 6-7 cups of dry or liquid ingredients in one. But considering that it is advisable not to fill it more than three of a quarter full, let us just say that 5.5 cups would be a fair estimate. So given that familiar measurement, here are three examples among the many uses for 1.5 quart slow cooker.

Dip for Chips

This is one option that proves very useful for group gatherings like parties, barbecues, or for just hanging out. A 1.5 quart slow cooker is just the right size for serving party dips for nachos or chips and it keeps it warm too. For instance, dump cheese sauce in this mini pot, heat it up for about an hour and leave it on the counter on low so that it will stay smooth and temperate for you and your guest to enjoy.

Sauces

You can make tomato or cream sauce with this mini cooker that is enough for 2-4 persons. Since it is the perfect size for small families, students and individuals, it permits one to enjoy sauces for pastas that one would not even consider having unless there is a huge pot boiling on a stove-top.

You can also make fruit sauces with a 1.5 quart slow cooker like cranberry sauce in stead of having one from a can or only on Thanksgiving. With equal portions of cranberries, water and orange juice, and double the amount of sugar that are cooked on high for about four hours, you can make home-made cranberry sauce any day of the year.

Small One-Pot Meals

Of course, you can also make one-pot meals with a 1.5 quart slow cooker. Yes, it is possible to create a roast with this little thing. Just think smaller portions like 1.5 pounds of roast chuck or cubed pork and about three pieces of chicken breast to name a few. You can flavor these up very well with appropriate portions of other ingredients and have appropriate servings of a slow-cooked cooked meal for 2-4 persons.

A 1.5 quart slow cooker is versatile and is a compact piece of equipment that makes an excellent addition to any home. Its uses includes (and are not restricted to) making dips for chips, sauces and small one-pot meals. Also, its size makes for easy cleaning and it fits properly inside dishwashers as well.
