Crock Pots: Cooking Without Looking
The cooking wares available nowadays are very useful. They shorten the cooking time without compromising the quality of food. Good and functional cooking ware is necessary for safe and quick cooking. One of the best cooking ware available in the market today is crock pots.
Crock pots also known as slow cookers are a countertop kitchen appliance that is used in cooking stews and other dishes with water at relatively low temperatures.
Crock pots are made up of glazed ceramic surrounded by a metal housing. It contains thermostatically controlled electric heating elements. It also has lidded round or oval cooking pot. Its lid is made up of glass. During cooking the users can see the contents of the pot without removing the lid.
Ceramic pots or crack pots function as both a cooking container and heat reservoir. The lid also of a crack pot is not hermetic. It means that pressure is not allowed to build up in the pot.
The ingredients that can be place in slow cooker are raw food and liquids like water, stock and wine. Crock pots heat the contents steadily to the temperature of 175 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit range. The temperature of crack pots does not exceed the boiling point of water at atmospheric pressure because of the non- hermetic feature of crack pots.
The liquid in the slow cooker allows transfer of heat from the wall of the pot to the contents. Flavor is also distributed well.
The lid of the pot should not be removed to avoid cooling of the contents and most especially to prevent warm vapor from escaping the pot. Removing the lid can also cause prolonged cooking time.
Using crock pots or slow cookers has its known advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages are overcooking of food is avoided, even if it is cooked longer than necessary.
Meat is cooked without removing its natural flavor compared to conventional cooking wherein the meat becomes tasteless when overcooked.
Crock pots are also popular because of its benefit of cooking without looking. It means that you just need to put all of the ingredients inside the pot then just let it cook by itself. The food will not be overcooked and stirring the contents is not required.
On the other hand some disadvantages are vitamins and other nutrients are lost in vegetables. In rare cases it can cause food safety problem because of the slow recovery of temperature after addition and withdrawal of contents. When the lid is removed heat and moisture can escape from the pot this prolongs the cooking time thus giving microorganisms the chance to grow.
The known disadvantages of crock pots can be avoided by the avoidance of the removal of the lid and avoiding the addition and withdrawal of contents during cooking.
Crock pots are really effective when they are used right. The Birth of this new generation of cooking ware gives the people the new experience of cooking without looking.
